Edayilakkad

Edayilakkad or Edayilekkadu is a picturesque waterlogged area set in the serene backwaters of Kavvayi, Valiyaparamba. Recognized as one of the largest islands in north Kerala, is a mesmerizing tourism spot where one can witness both the Arabean sea as well as the Kavvayi, separated by a narrow strip of land namely Valiyavaramba (which means “Big Border”). Edayilakkad is often confused with Trikkarippur. Trikkarippur is a village that is located east of this island. Apart from that Madakkal and Ayitti villages also surround this large island. Not only the scenic beauty but also two other major peculiarities of this place attracts tourists. The island is a favourite destination for avid bird watchers, researchers, and nature conservationists for the extravagant flora and fauna seen here. Endangered white-bellied sea eagle as well as Nervilia orchids are conserved here within the mangrove forests. Edayilakkad has a special visual treat to offer to its visitors, usually on traditional festival days like Onam. The place boasts a small area inside forest namely “Kavu” that is home for many monkeys. A lady who resides nearby is the one who feeds the monkeys regularly.
And a special feast is given to the monkeys on festive occasions, to capture which tourists flock here.
