The Eco-Tourism Project of Konni Elephant Camp, otherwise called Konni Aanathavalam, is one of the growing tourism tracts in South India. Located on the banks of the Achancoil river, this elephant camp is surrounded by dense grove forests and hills that form a wildlife sanctuary feel to this spot. At this place, one can enjoy the closeness with nature and see the wild elephants living a normal life here. The project, which is a joint venture of the Kerala Tourism Department and Konni-Achencoil Forest Development Agency, focuses its operations on taming, and training the baby elephants, which are found wandering or wounded after getting separated from their herd, in the forest. One can witness a lot of elephants- the official animal of Kerala State- being trained and sustained here. One or more trained guides or forest officials will be there to assist tourists during the visits and camping. A major attraction of the place is called “Aanathavalam”, which obviously is the reason behind the name of this place. The Konni Thavalam is an abode of many tall wooden elephant cages built with the capacity to hold 2-3 elephants at a time. The breathtaking views of elephant baths and feeding them here are some unparalleled visual treats that any nature enthusiast can get in their lifetime. Tourists are allowed to go closer to the elephants to observe how the wild elephants are taken care of. Along with the cages, a natural elephant museum which is yet to be developed even more is set up here, catching the attractions of its visitors. In addition to the scenic landscape and wonderful elephants, this tourist region is famous for its “no-waste” measures. The center recycles every waste that gets produced here. The elephant dung is used to make biogas, and the fiber in it is used to make papers- awesome, right? The center is really worth appreciating for the waste management carried out here. Regarding plastic waste, that also is recycled or reused to become eco-friendly. One can buy many eco-friendly things from the stalls that are provided by the center. Apart from sightseeing, visitors are also allowed to trek in this area. A trek to evergreen forests like Kurichi, Kattathi, Kottampara, and Chavarpandy are ideal spots for any level of trekker. The Peruvally in the Kallar River is another trekker destination in this region. The place- being closer to the river that emits a soothing rhythm, the end of trekking delivers a tranquil feel to the trekkers. Hearing the voice of nature here is extremely relaxing as well as enchanting. For the most adventurous trekkers who can make it to a 2-day trek, the Aanathavalam has a mesmerizing waterfall to offer- the rejuvenating waterfall of Manalar-Kumbhavurutty.
