Beach of Kovalam with glittering sand
Kovalam has been an internationally renowned tourist attraction since the 1930s. An enormous rocky promontory here has created a lovely bay with calm waters that make for great swimming. The beach is surrounded by lush coconut groves and supported by sharp headlands. This seaside city on the southern coast of Kerala is known for its clean and bizarre beaches surrounded by tall lighthouses, lined with glittering sand, that make it a favorite spot on the tourist map worldwide. Kovalam’s pristine beaches, clean coves, and sun-kissed beaches enliven the breath-taking landscape with its freshening up nature and warm ambiance. The beach is extremely popular with honeymooners and beach lovers, as it offers romantic moments as well as plenty of activities for adventure and fun. You can discover the popular sights all around the beach while sailing on a boat with your loved ones. When it comes to the perfect holiday destination, Kovalam is the best place to hang up the boots.
The beach offers a wide range of leisure activities. Sunbath, swimming, herbal body massage, cultural programmes and catamaran cruising are a few of them. It doesn’t take long for a coppery tan to appear on the skin when the tropical sun acts swiftly. During the day, the beach is alive with activity until late into the night. Among its amenities are budget cottages, Ayurvedic resorts, convention facilities, shopping zones, swimming pools, and Yoga and Ayurvedic massage centres.
Kovalam features three beaches: Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach, and Samudra Beach, separated by rocky outcroppings along its coastline. Together, they form the famous crescent of Kovalam beach. Apart from the geographical wonders, Kovalam is even more mesmerizing with the festivals held from January to March. The popular fairs and festivals of Kovalam are Village Fair, The Elephant Festival, Food Festival, Nishagandhi Dance Festival, and Swati Thirunal Music Festival, etc.
History:
Around the late 1920s, Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore built the Halcyon Castle resort here in Kovalam. Her nephew, the Maharaja of Travancore, later brought the place to public attention. In the 1930s, European travelers exploring the then Travancore kingdom discovered Kovalam beach’s potential for tourism. However, Kovalam gained fame when hippies on the Hippie Trail arrived here in the early seventies.
