Thenmala’s world-famous eco-tourism
A crown jewel on the Kerala tourism map, Thenmala’s world-famous eco-tourism is one of the finest eco-friendly projects in the world. Just 14 km away from the state border with Tamil Nadu, the town is 66 kilometres away from Kollam. The name Thenmala is translated as ‘Honey Hill,’ so it should come as no surprise that high-quality honey is exported from here. Built under the Kallada Irrigation and Tree Crop Development Project, this dam impounds the largest reservoir in the state hosting several ecotourism activities. A number of exciting excursions like adventure zone, Boating, Butterfly Safari, Children’s Park, Deer Rehabilitation Center, Leisure Zone, Musical Dancing Fountain, Nakshatravanam, a guided trekking program, a rope bridge, a 20 minutes light and sound show named “Thenoolum Thenmala held at “The Mayooram” the amphitheater make up the list of activities possible in Thenmala.
The adventure zone is conducive to adventure tourism. Here, one can indulge in Elevated Walkway, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, River Crossing, Nature Trails, Resting Spots, Lotus Pond, etc. An extensive nature trail winds its way through various areas of the zone, drawing a large number of nature tourists. In Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, boating is an hour long experience with the opportunity to see rare and exotic animals while passing through high lush evergreen forests and scenic hills. A guided trekking program through the outskirts of the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctury along the reservoir is a captivating experience here. Minimum 5 Trekker or on equivalent payment of Rs.625 is required to initiate trekking. Maximum number of Trekkers allowed is 20.
The creation of a butterfly-friendly landscape here has created an environment to support a vast number of butterfly species that abound in the region. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the butterflies and learn about them during a guided walk (Safari) through the butterfly garden. The Sculpture Garden- the dense forest garden has pathways that offer one an opportunity to explore nature closely. Adding to the experience is a stroll along the riverside walkway and crossing the suspension bridge. Man and Nature is the centerpiece of the garden. It depicts man and his relationship with nature as exemplified by a green forest, akin to unpolluted nature, synchronizing with the Thenmala Forests. Its uniqueness stems from the circulation paths around the sculptures and the inclusion of natural features within each zone. The “Natures Dance” – an open-air musical fountain – is another major attraction. Here, rhythmic water movements are organized into a dance.
Located here is the garden Nakshatravanam, which contains 27 trees each associated with a birth star. They have medicinal, social, or aesthetic values. There is a popular belief, that one can attain property and happiness, by planting one’s own tree (pertaining to his star) in his home. One can take a walk through the garden to learn about the trees.
