Muthukulam is a heritage village famous both for its backwaters as well as the epic Pandavarkaavu Temple which is one of the important destinations in the Pandava Pilgrimage Circuit in Kerala. With a thin strip of land separating Muthukulam from the Arabian Sea, this is one of the most picturesque tourist destinations in Kerala. A lesser-known picnic spot, which is the prime focus of a future ambitious pilgrim circuit program of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) is going to be developed based on pilgrim-themed tourism.
The village has three prime attractions in the area: Pandavarkaavu Temple, Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant, and the backwaters. Pandavarkaavu Temple is an ancient shrine that is believed to have been founded by Kunti Devi, the mother of Pandavas, as in the Mahabharata. The story behind the temple is as follows. Kunti Devi, during her pilgrimage along with her sons, wanted a place to perform her rituals and worship goddess Durga. For that, she directed son Bhima to look for a suitable spot, and it is on that spot that the temple was established. The murti in clay, set by Kunti Devi got replaced by the Panchaloha idol a few years ago. Not only Kunti Devi but also her sons consecrated idols of Lord Vishnu in five places near the Pampa River. Which eventually got transformed into temples namely, Thrichitat, Thiruppuliyoor, Thiruvaranmula, Thiruvanvandoor, and Thrikkodithanam respectively. One can find these ancient temples nearby the main Pandavarkaavu Temple within a short distance. Like many other temples, this one has main offerings such as kadalipazham (a variety of bananas) and the Thechi flower. So it would be advised to carry these before visiting the temple. The temple with adorable sculptures and paintings is even more beautified during the festivals, especially the annual festival held each year in the month of February. Another attraction, RGCCPP- that stands for Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant- also called the National Thermal Power Corporation is the first thermal power plant built in Kerala.
