The world-famous Pathiramanal- the ‘midnight sand’- is a tiny island tucked in the serene emerald green backwaters of Vembanadu Lake in Alleppey. An abode of birdwatchers’ Eden- the Bird Sanctuary- this mind-blowing small piece of land is a picture-perfect tourist destination that rests between Thanneermukkom and Kumarakom and is accessible only via a 40-minute drive by boat. The island inherits its magnificent beauty from the shimmering water surrounding it, the chirps of the birds, and the lush, dense greenery all around. And it is believed to have medicinal properties in each and everything that is on the island. Home to thousands of migratory birds and regional ones, the place is a visual treat as well as an incredible opportunity to explore the various species of birds like night heron, cormorant, Indian pond heron, watercock, whistling duck, cotton pygmy-goose, little egret, stork-billed kingfisher, and more, found here. So it is recommended to visit this spot, especially during the migratory seasons ( November to May). Surprisingly, there have even been reports of seeing the monarch flycatcher here.
Therefore, one should always remember to carry cameras and binoculars when visiting this place. This picturesque, tranquil location is ideal for activities that attract all kinds of tourists like boat riding, birding, hanging out with family and friends, and even romantic dating. The soothing atmosphere is a great way to relieve some stress for anyone visiting the place. And, for kids, the island has a zoo and aquarium that will make them joyous. Additionally, the breathtaking panoramic views one would get from this island are unbelievably impressive. One can enjoy the scenery and activities mostly in the daytime as no night accommodation facilities are provided on the island. But there’s a solution for that also- one can hire a houseboat for this purpose. Therefore, a bunch of shikhara boats and houseboats are often seen coming and leaving the island often- which is awesome to look at. The whole island takes not more than 5-6 hours to explore completely. Including a boat trip around the island, it barely consumes a day of its visitors- thus, Pathiramanl Island is a great choice for one-day trips.
It is believed that this island was previously called “Anantha Padmanabhan Thoppu”. As per historians, the land was formerly the property of a non-Keralite trader and later it was bought by Chevalier ACM Anthraper from M/S Bheemji and Devji trust of Kochi during the 1900s. But soon, it became an asset of the Government, and after then it is the Government that is conserving this island.
