“Varikkasseri Mana”, originally, the “Varikkumanchery Mana”- is an ancient Brahmin traditional house called “Mana” that reportedly has a history of over 1000 years and is a gem on the tourism map of Kerala. This mana was stamped in the hearts of Keralites when a few movies namely Devasuram, Aaraam Thampuran, and even more were shot in its premises. The glorious beauty of this grand mana was even more explored by many other films, hence also known as the filmmaker’s choice.
Situated at Manissery in Ottappalam, this traditional architecture wonder is a synonym of a blend of Keralite and western architecture. This place once was the royal house of the Varikkassery family and had a sovereign position among the Ashta gruha (translated as Eight Families) of Namboothiri families. The palace is a three-storied “Nalukett” which has a spacious padippura, 74 rooms, two pathayappura, a family pond, a family temple, and an oottupura. Rich in breathtaking architecture, the palace was designed by the then famous architect namely Shilpi Thampuran, and made using local red stones that give the mana a one-of-a-kind look. The mana- that houses Kerala’s rich heritage, open to the public with a mere entry fee of Indian rupee 20, has a public restricted place in the house which is the temple right inside of it.
