Meenkara Dam is an under-utilized scenic dam tourism destination in Kerala that will amaze anyone visiting it, for sure. Set on the embankments of the tributary Gayatri River of the Bharathapuzha River, this earthen dam provides a picturesque and soothing landscape surrounding it. The Dam is accessible from the village namely Muthalamada in the Palakkad district and is peculiar because of its masonry spillway sections, which offer wonderful sight to visitors once the spillways are opened. The dam, which is a part of the Gayatri Irrigation Project, was completed and opened in 1964. A boon in the irrigation project, the reservoir here supports agriculture and drinking water in the entire Palakkad district. Many farms in Palakkad are estimated to benefit from this irrigation scheme implemented here.
