Thirunavaya
The pristine village of Thirunavaya has a long story of its religious, historic, and cultural greatness to reveal to viewers. The picturesque village, which got mentioned in “Keralolpathi”- the book that speaks about the origin of Kerala, is a sacred land renowned for pilgrimage now. In the village, which dates back to ancient times, are temples dedicated to Vishnu, Siva, and Brahma, namely Tirunavaya Temple or Navamukunda/Vishnu Temple, Cherutirunavaya Brahma Temple, and Siva Temple/Tirunavaya Mahadeva Temple respectively, which people believe made the Nila River sacred. The village used to host Mamankam, the ancient cultural festival which had political significance, on the banks of the Nila River near Thirunavaya temple. This program was part of a trade fair in which traders from outside India also used to attend. This land is conserved with huge importance even today, which is understandable as one observes the “Nilapaaduthara- a slab of stone” on which the Zamorins used to stand during the Mamankam occasion.
Even today, pilgrims flock to this place mostly during the “Bali tarpana” on “Karkitaka vavu”. Located 8 km to the south of Tirur, the place is assumed to have once been inhabited by the Brahmins.
