Kadampuzha Devi Temple – the renowned pilgrimage shrine in Malappuram is the only temple in Kerala where there is no idol of the deity has been consecrated. Instead, the Poojas and rituals in the temple are executed to a “Hole”, which as per the local lore, is built from the arrow of Lord Siva. About the etymology, the name was derived from three Malayalam words- “Kadan”(a forest dweller), “Ambu”(an arrow), and “Azha”(a stream) respectively. The temple which is believed to have been established by the legendary Indian philosopher and theologian Adi Shankara in the 8th century has no major festivals but have Poomoodal- the offering of flower Thecchi, as well as Mutturakkal – which is the breaking of Coconuts in the temple, as the main offerings here. Also, the birthday of the deity- VanaDurga, is celebrated on the Karthika day in the Malayalam month Vrishchikam which falls usually in either November or December, so this is the perfect time for one to visit the place. The temple provides noon meals for free to everyone who comes here.
