Banasura Dam

Built across Banasura Lake, Banasura Dam is a picturesque tourist location with the lush green canopy of the Western Ghats as its backdrop. It is recognized as the largest earthen dam of India as well as the second-largest in Asia. Situated near Kalpetta, the dam serves as a popular starting point for adventurous trekkers. This dam changes its face according to the seasons. In monsoon, due to the merging of the reservoir banks with the water, small islands are seen on the top, forming a super-scenic view of the dam. But in summer, the water in the reservoir drawback from the embankments, and the islands disappear, making it less beautiful. So it is better to visit this place in the monsoon if you are here to capture photographs and sightseeing. The dam’s name is very much connected with Hindu mythology. It is believed that the name derived from the name of the king of Asuras namely ‘Banasura’, who performed penance on the hills surrounding the dam, hence named Banasura Hills.
