Angadipuram Thirumanthamkunnu Temple
This temple which has a significant part in the history of Kerala is a grand temple set on a hilltop that offers splendid views of the countryside beneath. The temple is unique in the fact that some of the rituals performed here are seen nowhere else. Also, the rituals are believed to be dating back to the 16th century. Thirumanthamkunnu Temple is situated on a hilltop in Angadipuram village in Malappuram, which once was the Valluvanad Rajavamsham’s capital city. Because of that, the deity of this temple was considered as the official goddess- “Paradevatha”- of the Kingdom.
It was this temple from where the Chavers- the martyrs- used to set out for the prestigious trade festival of that time, namely Mamankam. The Nair warriors who were called Chavers, as per belief, would come here to offer prayers to the temple deity, Thirumandhamkunnil amma, and get rituals performed on their weapons before going to participate in Mamankam. The platform on which the martyrs used to stand is still being conserved here as a memorial structure, near the main entrance.
