Kannur is unique in the fact that it had the privilege of hosting the residence of the only Muslim Royal Family in Kerala namely, the Arakkal Ali Rajas. It is conserved even today and the darbar portion of this Arakkalkettu (Arakkal Royal Palace) is set in the name of “Arackal Museum” which can be defined as a marvelous royal museum. It boasts some of the unseen and ancient heirlooms and artifacts, including the family seal, the pathayam (grain storage), furniture, an old telephone, weapons, telescopes, and many storage particulars, of that time. Situated near Ayikkara next to Kannur city, this museum was opened to the public in 2005 after a huge renovation costing around 9 crores.
