Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
Close to the magnificent western ghats, the village of Aralam is famous for the northernmost wildlife sanctuary of Kerala, namely Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary which was established long back in 1984. Spanning around 55 sq km the sanctuary is home to many varieties of regional as well as migrant birds, unique trees, unseen medicinal herbs, and endangered animals too. One can reach this haven surpassing one of the prime attractions nearby, namely the Aralam Farm. The farm has a significant place in the cultivation of hybrid coconut seeds in India. It is a mass producer of hybrid coconut seeds and has an attractive compound encompassing coconut palms, cashew nut groves, and other plantations. Rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is a dream come true for bird watchers. One must remember that the sight of flying birds like the Flame Throated Bulbul and Asian – Fairy Bluebirds is indeed a sight to behold. Heart-spotted Woodpecker, Southern Hill Myna, and many more are seen roaming around. A camera and a binocular are a must-have during this trip. This hill range has ample options for trekking also. One can choose between a jeep ride, trekking, or just walking around. Many visitors wind up trekking when they reach the Pothenplavu watchtower which offers an aerial view of the entire view of the forests and the lush greenery covered in mist in a glimpse. But there’s another destination that is even more beautiful- the Meenmutty Waterfalls.
