Athirappilly – Vazhachal Waterfalls
The Athirappilly – Vazhachal waterfalls are the most famous waterfall tourism spots in Kerala. Located within a 4km distance between the two, both are a favorite destination of regional people as well as foreigners. The inspiring beauty of the waterfalls here is perfect for a snap and hence is a common choice for photographers. Situated around 10km away from Chalakudy, the way to Athirappilly waterfalls is much like a drive through the wild. With huge trees and monkeys all around, and people having their leisure time on either side near the streams flowing down from the falls, a journey to this wild tract is really like going into nature. The entrance to the waterfalls, which is far from it, makes one take a walk of 10-15 minutes to reach the falls. All the way to the waterfall, one’s ears will be filled with the rhythmic music of water cascading the rocky boulders. The murmur of nature will also be audible then. Once you reach the waterfall, you will be mesmerized by the enchanting beauty of it- especially as the water crashes against the bottom rocks. A small and cute hut, which has stood against the heaviest water flows and worst weather in this region, is also visible from there. Besides the scenic beauty of the area, there is another treasure hidden in the wilderness-a unique and rare fauna. Researchers have reported cases of endangered Hornbills living here, as it’s the only place they can survive in the whole Western Ghats.
