Known as the “Dwaraka of the South”, the world-famous pilgrim destination Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is a holy place of worship for millions of devotees worldwide. Renowned as “Bhooloka Vaikuntam” which stands for “the home of Lord Vishnu on earth”, it takes its name “Guruvayur” from its history dating back to ancient times. There is a strong belief among devotees that the Central shrine of the temple was rebuilt in 1638 C.E. It is also believed that the idol of Lord Guruvayurappan- the main deity of the temple- was consecrated here by “Guru Brihaspathi” and “Vayu Deva”. Combining the prefixes of these names, the land got its name “Guruvayur”, which now is a synonym for God and Worship.
Apart from being the nucleus of pilgrimage, the temple has a visual treat to offer to its visitors. The walls adorned with rare and artistic mural paintings, huge pillars, ancient and recreated sculptures of idols, the mesmerizing architecture- are all a visual treat for tourists who, especially are historic enthusiasts. One will be stunned by the incredible views and architecture of the temple, and of course, by witnessing the devotee crowd over here. The temple, which reportedly had discrimination based on caste within the Hindu religion before decades, now has restrictions only on the dress code. So one should wear the traditional dress of Kerala while entering the temple. However, non-Hindus are strictly not allowed to enter the temple.
Regarding the prime elements of the temple, the temple boasts two Gopurams in Kizhakkenada (east) and Padinjarenada (west) respectively. The central shrine is surrounded by walkaways for the devotees, and then the Nalambalam (square shape) architecture. The temple also has Deepasthambhams which are combinations of several light pillars, which, when lit together unfold a magnificent scene. Dwajasthamba which is a 70 feet tall flagstaff covered in gold, is another prime attraction here. The famous Thulabharam, and temple’s own exclusive famed art performance namely Krishnaattam, are the important offerings here.
