The picturesque hillocks of Ilaveezhapoonchira are among the top picnicking spots and upcoming prime tourist spots in Kerala that offer spectacular trails for trekking. The breathtaking valley changes a lot during the monsoons to become an ethereal landscape ambiance. It is truly incredible to see this place come alive when the valley fills up that scenic lake over here. This Poonchira is surrounded by the three scenic hillock wonders named Mankunnu, Kudayathoormala, and Thonippara. The views of both sunrise and sunset from the valley are not less than a masterpiece of art. At those specific times of day, the landscape unfolds itself in an enthralling way. The exotic Ilaveezha poonchira derived its name from the presence of a ‘valley with a lake of flowers where leaves never fall’. No leaves are shed by the trees in the area, as its name implies. The stress of urban living can be considerably reduced with a trip to a secluded place like Poonchira, as it is signed by nature with the constant presence of fog, and a steadily blowing gentle breeze. One can enjoy and chill in this place any time- day or night. Those who want to stay can take advantage of the nearby rest house for experiencing comfortable and soothing nature life.
History
It is believed that this epic valley has a strong connection with the legends of Mahabharata. While the Pandava princes were banished and reached the forest, they are believed to have stayed here. The pool here is believed to be the bathing place of Panchali, the legendary heroine of Mahabharata. The local lore reveals that the lake was constructed by the Pandava Bhima for his wife Panchali, and since then this pool here is believed to be used by this legendary heroine of Mahabharata.
