Kottakkal
Kottakkal, which translates to the Land of the Fort, is a renowned town in Malabar for its ayurvedic heritage. Once a prominent area occupied by the Zamorins, this place was the strong military base of Valluvanadu Kingdom, at some point in history. It is no wonder why Kottaykal is growing in health care, educational sector, and commercially as well- the rich heritage that connects the place to ancient times where the steep knowledge was widespread is the reason, some say. The town is now best known for the Arya Vaidya Sala, where not only the locals but also foreigners flock to, due to the authenticity and originality of the Ayurveda medical practices followed here. Apart from this medical organization, Kottakkal is also known for its Kottakkal Pooram which is a grand temple festival held on the premises of Sree Viswambhara Temple, in honour of Dhanvantari Devi, the goddess of medicine and health. Additionally, The Kizhakke Kovilakam where the Zamorin resided, is presently conserved at Kottakkal, which adds to its historic heritage.
History
It was Vaidyaratnam P. S. Warrier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Sala and Kottakkal Natya Sangham at Kottakkal, who sheltered orphaned Mappila families from the attacks of British during the 1900s. This was the result of the protection provided by the Mappila gang which had Odayappurath Chekkutty as leader, to the residence of Zamorins (Kizhake Kovilakam) as well as the Arya Vaidya Sala during the Malabar Rebellion.
