Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

Known as the ‘Green Lung of Kochi’, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is an eco-tourism destination that is situated at the middle of the abuzz Kochi. Even though Kochi is known for the busy towns it boasts, Mangalavanam stands out from the list as it is purely a nature haven. It is a favorite destination for bird lovers, recommended spot for the ornithologists and a tranquil area for the nature enthusiasts. As much as 200 birds belonging to around 35 species are spotted in this area, till date. Along with those, this sanctuary is also home to 6 species of mammals and 2 species of amphibians. Mangalavanam, as the name indicates is a dense green environment with many kinds of mangroves and associated species like the endangered Acanthus ilicifolius and Acrostichum aureum. The tidal lake, which is home to several species of fishes, here is bordered by the thick mangroves and connected to the serene backwaters of Cochin.
