Mannanam Backwaters

More than a backwater destination in itself, Mannanam is more a gateway to the backwater locations of Alappuzha and Ernakulam. Canal cruising boat trips are arranged here via the Pennal Canal, and boating here is a favorite pastime for tourists and locals alike. The Mannanam mainland is a renowned pilgrim center marked by the Chavara church and the Chavara Art Museum. The place has a rich connection to the propagation of the Christian community as the first house of the CMI Congregation was founded here by Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara.
