The least known tourist destination in Muthanga, the tiny but scenic Wildlife sanctuary, is a location where every visitor would like to come back someday. One of the highlighted eco-tourism centers of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, this one is a tranquil rainforest that connects the famous Nagarhole and Bandipur parks. With its opulent flora and fauna, and a greenish landscape, this is going to be a prime tourist destination for nature enthusiasts. Founded as part of an Elephant Project in the ’90s, the sanctuary has now grown to be the second-largest in the whole of Kerala. Also, it is now one of the prominent wildlife sanctuaries in South India. As a well-preserved wildlife sanctuary with its rich bio-diversity, it boasts various trees and plants like Maruthi, rosewood, venteak, and animals like elephants, deers, tigers, monkeys, jungle cats, wild dogs, and more. Along with those, the sanctuary is also an abode for a huge population of butterflies, insects, and birds like peacocks, cuckoos, jungle fowls, owls, and more. As part of eco-tourism, one can visit the wild animals roaming around, elephant camps, go on jeep safaris, do treks, watch birds, and learn about tribal culture, and more, especially from June to October. For one to get more adventurous, elephant rides are possible here with the permission of the Forest Department.
