Nilambur

The place is renowned for its Hangling cable bridge across Chaliyar River, Teak Museum, Nilambur Kovilakam, Nedumkayam Rainforest, Tribal Settlement and Other Sights like Adyanpara. Nilambur boasts one of the oldest teak plantations in India in its Conolly’s Plot and dates back to 1840s. The only teak museum in the country, established in 1995, the teak museum is the first of its kind in the entire world built with sole aim of creating awareness about the teak plantations. Set amidst an extravagant butterfly park and a wildlife garden, the museum has visual treats both inside and outside of it. The museum is an abode of artistic things made using teak, out of which the roof being the most spectacular one, made with a half century old root system of a teak tree. The clock, lounge chair, wall hangings, the doors and windows, vessels, portraits of the people behind museum, and more, the list of teak exhibits is fascinating. Along with these objects, the Conolly’s Plot, trunk of “Kannimara”- the oldest teak tree, also are exhibited here.
Additionally, nilambur has the story of Nilambur Kovilakam- the residence of Nilambur Royal families- to share to its visitors. The Kovilakam, built with ancient Kerala traditional architecture, is perfect for one who is an avid searcher of ancient monuments. The Nilambur Paatulsavam- the famous festival in which the hymns are sung, is like a magic spell that takes one to the past. Nedumkayam Rainforest, which is the heart of Nilambur forest is the integral part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and boasts a vast variety of flora and fauna. Perfect for trekking, the place also is home to several iron bridges made by the British and a tomb of a British Engineer. Apart from those above, Nilambur has one more treasure in its tourism attractions- the tribal settlement areas where there are enough waterfalls. The hills of Vallomthode and Adyanpara are rich in tribal settlement as well as breathtaking waterfall views.
