Founded in 52 AD, this first Asian church with the ‘Our Lady of Assumption’, St. Mary’s Forane Church has a history of over 20 centuries. Now it is a Forane church of Ernakulam- Angamaly Archdiocese of Syro – Malabar Rite. Located close to Cherthala, this ancient church is easily accessible via Cherthala – Arookuty Road.
History:
It is believed that the cross which St. Thomas erected was thrown into Vembanad, and after floating a few distances it reached a small island namely “Mattel”. Some women who were there to cut grass unknowingly struck the cross and it suddenly started to bleed. It is said that they handed it over to a Christian family, and it led to the formation of this church.
