Payyambalam beach

A favorite hangout destination for both tourists and locals alike, Payyambalam beach is a clean and beautifully set beach right at the heart of Kannur town. Renowned as the “Walking beach of Kannur” due to the 4km long shore walkaway on which the golden sands are scattered, it draws visitors mostly during evenings for its soothing breeze and adorable view of the sunset. The beach, a popular destination of filmmakers, was featured by renowned directors in many Tamil movies like Alai Payude (Mani Ratnam) and advertisements like Worldspace (A.R. Rahman). As it is located near the city, the beach is easily accessible. A narrow cliff-based garden is what separates the beach from the town. It only takes a small bridge to step on the beach. Near the entrance bridge are the monuments of historical political leaders set up. The beach garden also boasts a sculpture of a mother and child which is the work of the famous Kanai Kunhiraman. Above the beach is the burial space of the Thiyya community located.
