Perunthenaruvy
A yet to get developed, fine picnic spot- the Perunthenaruvy waterfalls is a picturesque tourist destination that is lesser known to the outside world. Set on the Western Ghats of the Sahyadri Range, this waterfall, known for its width rather than its height, offers a relaxing and rejuvenating ambiance to its visitors. The name “Perunthenaruvi” translates to “Huge Honey Stream”. As it mentions honey, it is obvious that a lot of bees and beehives are found surrounding the waterfall. Perunthenaruvy, which originates from the lush green forests of Sabarimala, with two shores namely Kudamurutty and Vechoochira, and two waterfalls called Panamkudantha and Padivathil, flows to merge with the sacred river Pamba. A walk of 5 minutes or a trek of 20 minutes through tea plantations will get you to the waterfalls here.
This region, almost hidden in the wild leaves no sign of a waterfall during the monsoon, as the stream gets filled with a lot of water and flows with a tremendous force. As the monsoon departs, the waterfall slowly starts to be visible along with the boulders that give way to the streams. Along with that, the beautifully tiled-up soft stones add to the beauty of this area. This place is a treat for both eyes and ears with its scenic beauty as well as the adorable music of the cascades which is audible even from far. The place offers a few rocky pools, which are generally safe to swim, but sometimes are a dangerous spot. Additionally, snakes living in these crevices can also be seen.
The crevices, that may be slippery and pools of unknown depth demand risk and caution while trying for a dip. This is generally the case with the bottom of the fall. Upstream is safer for swimming. Therefore, the place is being developed by the Tourism Department. Sooner or later, tourists are going to flock to this region closest to nature.
Mystery
The picturesque Perunthenaruvi has a strong myth regarding accidents that occurred here, at times. The myth revolves around a man namely Chakkan Velan who was a drunkard and a molester. Tired of his misdeeds some villagers planned to kill him at this waterfall. As per the plan, they pushed Velan downstream but somehow he managed to take hold of those who tried to kill him and everyone died together drowning in the water. After that incident, it is believed that his wandering spirit caused all the mishaps here. As a solution, villagers erected a temple nearby, solely for Chakkan Velan. The local lore says that the number of accidents was reduced to a great extent after building this temple.
