Shakthan Thampuran Palace
Formerly known as the Vadakkechira Kovilakam, the Shakthan Thampuran Palace is one of the rare palaces out there in Kerala that has a beautiful blend of Dutch and Kerala styles of architecture. It is located very close to the famous Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur, which is the ground for the epic ‘Thrissur Pooram’ that takes place every year with an audience of lakhs of people from all over the world. Originally, it was built in a different form and it was renovated by the Shakthan Thampuran in its present form.
Architecture: With a fusion of Dutch and Kerala architectures, this palace is a two-storeyed building that is beautifully crafted in the traditional Kerala style Naalukettu. Immaculate craftsmanship is observed in the interiors as it is always a comfortable atmosphere inside the palace regardless of the outside climate.
Attractions
Museum: A dedicated exhibition hall is an important attraction here. This museum houses several types of galleries, including Sculpture, Epigraphy, and Bronze Galleries. Students can find a lot of information on the transition of ancient writings from here.
Tomb: The palace is the resting place of Shakthan Thampuran along with a Zamorin and a ruler of Kochi.
Sacred Serpent Grove: The sacred serpent grove preserves an important element of Hindu belief here.
Heritage Garden: Now widely considered as a garden cum park in Thrissur city, this garden has many indigenous plants and trees of Kerala preserved here. Also, the wide pond upon the shores of which the garden lies offers plenty of leisurely places to sit back and relax.
Entry Timings: 09.30 AM – 04.30 PM. Open all days except on Mondays.
Entrance Fee: A nominal entrance fee that ranges from 20 to 100INR can be expected there.
