The historical monument of St Angelo Fort, originally known as Kannur Fort, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in North Kerala. With its ancient history dating back to the times of Portuguese ruling, this imperial fort structure is an ideal spot for researchers and historians to explore past colonialism and battles. The fort is believed to have been established by the then Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francesco de Almeida in 1505 CE, and later it was sold to the then King of the Arakkal dynasty in 1790 CE. Unfortunately, the Arakkal dynasty could not hold it for so long and the British conquered this fort in the same year, and they used it as their military base. At present, being maintained by the Archaeology Survey of India.
