The host of the world-famous Thrissur Pooram- known as the festival of festivals- is the ancient temple of Vadakkumnathan (Lord Siva). Set on an elevated peak at the heart of the Thrissur town, this temple is renowned for its structure purely made up of wood and stone. Along with preserving the beliefs of the devotees, the temple architecture also is preserved here with much care that it resulted in being recognized with ‘Award of Excellence’ by UNESCO.
The compound in which the temple stands is calculated to be around 9 acres and has a massive fortified wall. One can enter the compound through any of the 2 gopurams- east or the west. The remaining gopurams at north and south are not open to the public, hence not accessible. Surpassing one of the gopurams takes you to the spacious ground that encircles the actual temple- namely “Thekkinkaadu Maithaanam” which is the venue for Thrissur Pooram. After this festival, this ground area becomes a popular place where people are often seen hanging out or just relaxing.
As per fables, it is believed to be the first temple built by Parasurama- a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu.
