Valapattanam is best known for the wood-based industries it boasts. Set on the banks of the Valapattanam river, this place has a wood industry history that dates back to the time when King Solomon used to import wood from here. Now this place’s main landmark is Western India Plywoods Limited- the largest wood industry in South East Asia. About the tourism aspects, the place is abundant with dense mangrove forests and a fishing harbor where people flock to. Many wood varieties like Teak, Irula, Elavu, sandalwood, Karimurukku, cash crops such as tea, coffee, rubber, cashew nuts as well as tobacco are being cultivated here. This is the only place in Kerala where tobacco cultivation takes place. Boating trips can be arranged here.
