Sasthamcotta Lake, also known as Sasthamkotta Lake, is Kerala’s largest freshwater lake, and is ranked as one of the top wetlands of international significance under the Ramsar Convention. This lake’s name is associated with the ancient Sastha temple (a pilgrimage centre) located on its banks. Describing the beauty and tranquility of the lake is really a tedious task. The place is mesmerizing because of the emerald beauty of the surrounding landscape of greenery and peaks. While boating on the calm and crystal clear water of the lake, one can witness the lines of tall swaying coconut trees that stand like sentinels of Kerala- God’s own Country. There is no better way to experience the incredible beauty of the lake than by boat. Only bird chirps can be heard around the lake as all else is overshadowed by the spectacular scenery. Hundreds of monkeys are seen in the area on the banks of the lake, surrounding the temple of Sasthamkotta.
There is an abundance of larvae in the lake called cavaborus that eat bacteria in the lake water, which makes the water pure for drinking purposes. In all directions except the south, where a bund has been built to separate the lake from the rice fields adjacent, the lake is surrounded by steep mountains. Those who are keen birdwatchers will enjoy the local and migratory birds here. The waters of the lake are also home to a multitude of freshwater fish, and watching the fishermen at work on their small boats is an added treat for the tourists.
