Kaviyoor Cave Temple
Tucked away in the western embankments of the Manimala river, Kaviyoor, formerly known as “Papiyoor”, is an upcoming tourist destination having opportunities in Kerala Tourism because of the archaeological eminence showcased on the ancient temples it boasts. The two temples here, containing some of Kerala State’s earliest stone sculptures are an abode of paintings and sculptures belonging to the 17th – 18th century, are the heart of the tourism at Kaviyoor. Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple, also known as Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple, is a temple that has tremendous historical value. The temple, which has a remarkable similarity to the old Pallava architecture style, is conserved by the Archaeological Department.
Another temple, namely the Thrikkakkudy cave temple, is a cut rock temple carved on a gigantic rock, famous among historians worldwide. As per historians, this temple also has an architectural resemblance to that of the Pallava traditional architecture. Speaking of the structure of this cave temple, it has a central shrine where Siva Linga- the idol of Lord Siva is sanctified, an Ardhamandapa (stage), and a structure with pillars. The temple faces west and is 19ft 8inches wide and 8ft 6inches high.
