Pothundy Dam – one of the oldest dams in India that is famous for its exclusive style of building components is perhaps the most recommended family outing destination situated en- route to Nelliyambathi in Palakkad. Established in the 19th century, the dam is also famous for its “Nemmara Vallengi Vela Festival” which is held on the embankments here every year. The manicured garden, which is the gateway to this earth-filled dam structure, has varieties of toned plants, trees, sitting areas, sculptures, parks, rides, and walkaways, to compose a sensation of delight in anyone entering the dam site. Once the garden walk is over, one is led to the arduous steps that lead to the heart of the dam. Walking over the steps may be a little wearisome, but there is amazing scenery waiting at the top, so continue walking. The dam which is surrounded by the Nelliyambathi hills offers the wonderful beauty of the emerald green water adorned with the dense canopy, from the walkaway on top of the reservoir.
Spanning around 13,500 acres of land, the dam is not beautiful only with its scenery, it has even more charm as it drives the major part of the drinking water supply to several panchayaths in Palakkad. Developed also as an inevitable part of the inland fisheries project, the spot is even more interesting to researchers because of its peculiarity of the core wall being built with a mixture of jaggery and quick lime.
