With the streets lined up with wall-sharing small houses that lead to the famous Kalpathy Viswanatha Swamy temple of Kalpathy, this village is a must-visit for historic enthusiasts. “Kolangal”- the artistic drawings made with rice flour – drawn in front of every house situated here, talks of centuries-old charming tradition and Brahmin culture to its visitors. The mesmerizing view of this is complemented by the cuisines- especially the idli, sambar, ghee-rich sweets, and more, which have slight variations from Kerala’s own recipes but are rich in Tamil style.

Also known as “Kasiyil Pakuthi Kalpathy” which translates to Half Banaras, is what glorifies the unmatched architecture and traditions in this area. It is believed that the place got such a name because the idol consecrated was brought from Kasi Viswanatha Swamy temple in Benares. Kalpathy Ratholsavam- the popular festival held at this temple, is so popular that, one witnessing the occasion will be amazed by seeing the streets full of people and the lack of space to walk around. All the temples nearby, whether big or small, is a part of this wonderful festival.
History
As per historians, the place was offered by the then Raja of Palakkad Kombi Achan, in 1425 AD, to the Brahmin Community from Tamilnadu who were set to Calicut in fear of Tipu Sultan.
