Atop the Murugan Hill at Kurisumala is Kottathavalam, a cave carved out of a rocky surface. It is believed that the cave is where the Madura royal family used to rest and immerse themselves in joy. A number of sculptures of Gods and Goddesses including Madurai Meenakshi, Ayyappa, Murugan, and Kannaki, in addition to ancient weapons, fill the cave, making it an important archaeological site. It is every picnicker’s dream to picnic on this elevated path; it is serene, secluded, and tranquil, and the birds and animals in the area make it even more special.
