The lesser known tourism gem of Kerala- “Choolannur Pea Fowl Sanctuary” or “Mayiladumpara”- which is locally known as “Mayiladum Kunnu” is considered as the only Peacock Sanctuary within India. A must-visit tranquil location for the bird and nature lovers as well as photographers, this wildlife sanctuary has a not-so dense, yet large forest area that is home to hundreds of numerous bird species including the major one- the majestic Peacocks. The sanctuary, which demands a light trek to get into the forest, along with enchanting landscape views, also offers the sweet murmur of birds and the meow like sound of peacocks. No worries about proper guidance in this area- a guide or a forest official will be there to guide. To get the best views, it is recommended to visit the place during morning and evening, as in the afternoon, under the hot sun, the beautiful creatures might be hidden in the deep forest. Capturing snaps of these conserved, yet aesthetic birds is allowed here. And no worries if your child can really enjoy there, there’s a small park inside the sanctuary for playful activities.
Situated near Thiruvilvamala, spanning an approximate land of 500 hectares, this place was renamed in 2008 to ‘Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary dedicated to the memory of Sri.K.K.Neelakantan’ as a tribute to this great writer.
